Managing Director & Chief Development Officer

The Role

MCE is hiring an experienced Managing Director & Chief Development Officer (CDO) to oversee all Guarantor recruitment, capital raising, and marketing and communications. The CDO will be expected to raise all funds for MCE’s Notes program, raise all funds from Foundations (PRIs), create new and innovative fundraising strategies and products, recruit all Guarantors, create a community of Guarantors to facilitate peer recruitment, and manage all marketing and communications for MCE. The CDO will also apply for, and manage, any grants to MCE. The CDO will report directly to the CEO, and will manage one direct report who will support marketing, communications, event planning and other projects. The CDO is an integral member of the senior management team—along with the CEO, CFO and CIO—and will contribute significantly to organization strategy and tactics. Preference for a candidate based in Washington, DC or San Francisco, CA.

Responsibilities

Guarantor Recruitment and Retention

  • In concert with CEO and board members, design and implement a multi-year Guarantor recruitment strategy in the US and Europe that will significantly increase MCE’s pool of guarantees
  • Responsible for MCE Guarantor recruitment, both individual and institutional, with significant support from CEO and Board members
  • Responsible for creating a community of MCE Guarantors, with chapters in several US cities, and regular events to facilitate Guarantor-to-Guarantor recruitment
  • Responsible for recruitment of Direct Guarantors to support MCE’s bank facilities

Debt Fundraising

  • Partner with the CFO to raise all investment capital needed for MCE’s portfolio team (all debt capital)
  • Raise all non-bank funding for MCE (PRIs from foundations, Notes from high net worth individuals, MCE’s asset backed lending program, etc.)
  • Manage all of MCE’s relationships with wealth managers to facilitate the sale of Notes in the U.S. and Europe
  • Manage due diligence process executed by potential lenders, platforms and wealth managers
  • Manage all of MCE’s relationships with online platforms to sell Notes
  • Travel to events and conferences on a regular basis to sell Notes
  • Design and implement new financial products targeted to specific audiences (asset-backed, 0% tax deductible notes, etc.)

Grant Management

  • Originate and apply for grants, if appropriate; manage grant reporting.

Marketing and Communications

  • Lead MCE’s marketing and communications, including media relations, publications, speaking engagements, emails, newsletters, blog, social media, annual impact reports (one for Guarantors and one for investors), and the MCE website.

 Candidate Requirements

  • 10+ years of work experience, with demonstrated success in business development or fundraising
  • Experience with impact investment or wealth management preferred
  • Experience working with high net worth individuals and foundations
  • Strong understanding of debt finance
  • Strong negotiations skills
  • Strong public presence with excellent public speaking skills
  • Ability to interface with board members and C level executives inside and outside of MCE
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • Highly motivated and self-starting professional, can work independently and without significant supervision
  • Highly attentive to detail
  • Highly organized, able to meet regular deadlines independently
  • Passion for MCE’s mission
  • Good sense of humor, strong team player
