Our Impact Methodology
For all of our investments, we assess and monitor social impact through a number of methods at different stages. Click on the stages below to learn more.
1. Initial Appraisal »
We assess social impact as a discriminating factor in the first stages of a potential investment. We carefully evaluate each prospect’s alignment with our mission and its contribution to our impact objectives within the specific context of each individual investment.
2. Due Diligence »
We place a strong emphasis on social impact during our on-the-ground due diligence process, which includes interviews with end beneficiaries as well as a systematic review of client data, policies, and procedures in place to ensure maximum impact.
3. Monitoring »
We collect social and operational data on a regular basis post-investment to monitor the growth of our investments over time.
4. Annual Impact Surveys »
We conduct annual impact surveys of our MFI and SGB portfolios, which gather valuable data on end borrower, client, employee, and sector compositions, the breadth of additional products and services, and more. The impact metrics that we collect are all aligned with the IRIS+ system established by the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN).
5. Reporting »
We produce an annual impact report to share the most up-to-date impact data with our stakeholders and the broader impact investment community.
MCE is supportive of various industry initiatives that are advancing impact measurement and management practices, including IRIS+, the Impact Management Project, GIIN’s Navigating Impact Initiative, and the Social Performance Task Force, among others.
